Macbook’s Thunderbolt 3 ports take its functionality to the next level

When we take a look at the new Macbook, we come to see that the USB-A ports are gone. The same is the case with all smartphones, laptops, and tablets, manufactured recently.

Instead of the USB-A ports, the devices nowadays feature USB-C ports that are slimmer. USB-C ports are Apple’s proprietary lighting connectors.

Since the Macbook no longer has other ports such as HDMI and USB-A, one can use usbc hub with HDMI to connect to MacBook the different devices that use these ports.

Let us take a closer look at what USB-C is:

USB Type-C is frequently referred to as USB-C. As compared to USB-A, USB-C is a relatively new standard for delivering data and power.

USB-C plug is symmetrical, and can hence be inserted in either way. This allows one to overcome the frustrations involved with earlier USB plugs, for using which, one had to sometimes bend the cable. This could reflect over the strength of the connection.

Beyond being a more feasible arrangement physically, USB-C involves the use of several powerful technologies, including USB Power Delivery and Thunderbolt. USB-C hence transforms the way we use the MacBook and related peripherals in several ways.

MacBook already has USB-C ports, so, for using the port, one may not have to invest in a USB c hub with HDMImultiport adapter, unless one intends to use some additional ports. However, when one needs to use other ports such as USB-A, HDMI, Ethernet, or DisplayPort, using a USB c hub with HDMIis the right way to go about it.

In most cases, USB-C is built over the second-generation USB 3.1 data-transfer standard. In theory, this delivers data at speeds of up to 10 Gbps. This is twice the performance in terms of speed, when compared to first-gen USB 3.1 and USB 3.0, both of which top out at 5Gbps. The devices that support USB 3.1 data transfer standard mention specifications such as SuperSpeed+ or USB 3.1 Gen 2.

Another important standard is USB 3.2 Gen 2X2. The standard features a couple of 10Gbps lanes. The total data traffic that it can transfer is hence 20Gbps. However, only a few devices use USB 3.2 Gen 2X2 as of current.

Using the right cables is important for ensuring high-speed data transmission:

When one buys any data transfer cables such as USB-C cables, one should try and ensure that they are of high quality. Such a cable would have the SuperSpeed logo. When one finds “10” on them, they can transfer data at a speed of 10Gbps.

Cable, standards, as we have seen across the years, transform rapidly with changes in USB specs. The trend seems likely to continue.

Video delivery, power, and speed

When we consider the case of the MacBook, an important advantage that comes with the use of USB-C specification is that it supports Thunderbolt 3 data transfer technology, created by Intel. Beyond the MacBook, a few of the other notebooks, laptops, and desktops support Thunderbolt 3 connectors, which look the same as USB-C connectors.[ usb hub with long cable]

Theoretically, A USB-C port powered by the Thunderbolt 3 technology pushes data up to speeds of 40Gbps. This is a significant improvement of 4X the speed over USB 3.1 and goes to show that data transfer rates are fast transforming. The data transfer rate of 40Gbps is 3000 times quicker than the USB 1 spec of 12Mbps. So, for quicker data transfer rates, one should invest in devices such as MacBook, which have USB-C ports powered by Thunderbolt 3 technology.

The ability to transmit video signals over a common connection is a direct result of higher data transfer rates. This is enabled by the USB-C connectors of MacBook, wherein using USB c hub with HDMIgives access to several ports, such as HDMI and DisplayPort.

A user should primarily consider what devices does he intend to connect to the MacBook and invest in a multiport adapter that features the same. VGA is another important video connector for projectors and TVs. This grants one the liberty to make the best possible use of one’s MacBook at both, home and office.

Power delivery over MacBook

USB-C ports over MacBook are powerful and support the USB Power Delivery (USB PD) specification. They are Thunderbolt 3 ports.

When we consider the case of a USB 2.0 port, it merely delivers 2.5 W of power. But this is sufficient to slowly charge a phone.

In the case of USB 3.1, the figure shoots up to 15 W. USB PD however is a class apart as it delivers 100 W of power. This is more than 6 times the power delivered by USB 3.1.

Therefore, laptop powered projectors may be used with the MacBook. However, the applications of USB PD most frequently find use in external battery packs and high power chargers.

A perspective for the future

USB-C is widely recognized as the connector to use as of now. But the next alternative to be popularized is USB4.

USB4 has the capabilities for moving data at speeds of 40Gbps. It delivers data at speeds of 40Gbps and transmits 15 watts of power for the accessories. This can support two 4K displays or one 8K display.

Another advantage that USB4 will bring is that it will use an oblong connector, similar to the one used by USB-C and will work with presently prevalent devices as well. This will include devices that use USB 2.0. But one would have to use an adapter for the same. Just as an instance, when one uses a MacBook, a USB c hub with HDMIis a great investment.

USB4 uses Thunderbolt 4 specs. Among the top features of the same are bidirectional lanes of data transfer for facilitating video conferencing. Bidirectional data transfer safeguards against congestion and jams.

Higher levels of security and compatibility with all Thunderbolt 3 devices such as docking stations are added features. As dynamic data flow to suit devices occurs, faster devices are not slowed down by newer devices.
